Alaska zwei is a cozy vegan café about 10 minutes by foot from Nakameguro Station, offering delicious lunch plates, sandwiches, and a variety of baked goods.
About Alaska zwei
According to an interview with the current owner of Alaska zwei in Vegewel, the originally vegetarian café Alaska turned entirely vegan in September 2016 after being taken over by the regular customer and now owner Mrs. Osar. After that it was renamed Alaska zwei, with “Zwei” meaning “two” in German. She was inspired to create a vegan café after staying abroad in Paris and Berlin, as food restrictions due to religious reasons and vegan diets were large-spread there. After all, vegan food can be enjoyed by everyone without feeling guilty.
The stylish retro design creates a cozy and nostalgic atmosphere, perfect for some Instagram shots! Large windows invite natural sunlight.
About the food
For food, you can choose between several plates (brown rice plate, soup plate, curry plate, and salad plate). Furthermore, they have some sandwiches, bagels with various toppings as well as some sweets to indulge in, including soft-serve and muffins. Their breads stem from the popular vegan bakery Universal Bakes in Shimo-Kitazawa.
Additionally, they offer a monthly changing seasonal menu. Of course, everything is 100% vegan!
My Experience
I went to Alaska zwei twice so far and tried various things.
Salad Plate
When I visited Alaska zwei for the first time, I chose their salad plate because the German in me came through and I wanted to try their bread. It is possible to choose 2 or 3 pieces of bread. In order to get a taste of all of them, of course I had to get 3 pieces! The plate also comes with a drink of your choice: apple juice, coffee or rooibos tea.
The salad itself was crispy green salad and came topped with sweet kaki and walnuts. It was yummy, but I wish there would have been a bit more dressing.
I absolutely loved the bread though! The focaccia was fluffy and slightly salty. Same goes for the bagel. The third bread was shaped like a croissant and had crispy edges! The breads came with a bit of olive oil on the side which was great.
Seasonal Special: Hiyashi chai bun
Last time I went there, I tried their Vietnamese noodles which were a seasonal special in July. It was a cold noodle dish perfect for summer! The rice noodles were topped with some raw veggies, lots of coriander, pickles, soy meat and a delicious sauce. I loved it!
The meal was accompanied by a starter: A crispy rice cracker with black sesame seeds, veggies and a sweet and sour sauce. Yum!
And that’s not all, a yoghurt with mango and passion fruit came with it as well for dessert, as well as a drink.
Soft Serve
Nevertheless, I also wanted to try their soft serve. Mainly to write another post about it, but also because I was craving another sweet treat. For soft serve, you can get a plain one or choose between two sauces for topping. I went for berry sauce!
The soft serve was smooth and delicious but had a strong soy taste. If you are not into that, check out one of these places instead.
When I came to Alaska zwei in winter, they also had a chocolate soft serve as a Christmas special which is quite rare and it was even better than the regular soft-serve! It came with strawberry sauce and some granola.
XMas Muffin
On that day, while waiting at the register for payment the Christmas muffins caught my eye, and I got one for take-out. Seriously, this was one of the best muffins I ever had! It was quite large and extremely fluffy! Also, it came with yummy seeds, dried cranberries and Christmas spices inside.
