If you live in or near Shinjuku and find it bothersome to go all the way to Universal Bakes or other vegan bakeries that are a bit far away, go check out MORETHAN BAKERY’s „Sunday Vegan“, a collaboration with Universal Bakes where every single item they offer on that day is completely vegan.
About MORETHAN Bakery
Located less than a 20 min walk away from Shinjuku station, MORETHAN BAKERY is the perfect place for every vegan to get bread for their Sunday breakfast or to stock up on bread for the week ahead.
When I went there, they offered everything from plain breads to sandwiches to pastries and everything in-between! They even had pastries I used to love before I turned vegan about eight years ago and never saw in a vegan version which was so awesome!
According to Happy Cow, it is vegan-friendly at weekdays as well with at least 50% vegan options including for example vegan bagels, donuts, cookies, and breads.
My Experience
I was really surprised by how many options MORETHAN BAKERY had, maybe even more than Universal Bakes itself has in a day as they always rotate the kinds of bread they sell. There were different kinds of normal bread, baguette, toast, beagles, muffins, donuts, croissants, pan au chocolate, sandwiches including fruit sandwiches and some filled with sweet bean paste and milk cream as well as savory ones and melon pan. In other words: it was heaven for all bread lovers!
Pan Au Chocolat
As I used to eat it every week and had to do without it since I became vegan, I was so happy to see pan au chocolate! And it was just as good if not even better than how I remembered it. It was crispy on the outside and had a sweet, decadent chocolate filling!
Melon Pan
One thing you have to eat in Japan is melon pan! It’s hard to find a vegan version, but if you discover one, try it! The name comes from the melon-like looking sugar dough crust and has nothing to do with the flavor. The inside is super fluffy and sweet and is a nice contrast to the crispy outside.
Croquette Burger
The Croquette Burger was amazing! The flavorful croquette was super soft on the inside and very crispy on the outside and went really well with the mayo sauce and finely grated veggies. All in all it was crispy and soft and creamy at the same time which made it so delicious.
Chocolate Beagle
The chocolate beagle was good, but not so chocolaty (they just used some coco powder in the dough I guess) and a bit dry, so I recommend spreading on some vegan butter!
Walnut Cranberry Bread Roll
I don´t remember the correct name of this bread, but it had a nice crust and was delicious! I think it’s be great as a sandwich base.
Everything I had at MORETHAN BAKERY was very delicious, however I didn’t like that at the register they packaged almost everything into plastic. It’s not only wasteful, but also makes the crust of the bread soft and a bit gummy-like. Therefore bakeries usually use paper bags instead…
