This gem in Shimo-Kitazawa is a must-go restaurant if you're a fan of Hong Kong food, especially tofu pudding! The best? Everything is 100% vegan! In this post, I introdue the vegan restaurant Ming-Teng Hao Hao.

About Ming-Teng Hao Hao

Located on the first floor of re-load, the vegan restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating, perfect for mild spring and fall days. Upon entering, you are greeted by a stylish interior, decorated with mouthwatering pictures of the food on the walls. There are both table and counter seats, making it the perfect spot to go to alone or with friends.

After choosing your seat by yourself, you can go to the counter and order your food. After paying, you will receive a buzzer that indicates when your dish is ready to be picked up.

About the food

Ming-Teng Hao Hao offers a variety of main dishes, including noodles or rice based ones. I love their tofu pudding for a light dessert, or as a small afternoon snack. They also have pineapple cookies.

They also offer unique and yummy drinks. Check out Ming-teng's instagram in order not to miss any specials! For example last year, they had a pop up inside of Isetan Shinjuku where they sold these beautiful and super delicious drinks.

The restaurant also offers a lunch set for only 1300¥, consisting of one main dish of your choice, soup, two side dishes, and a small soy pudding or two pieces of gyoza. For an extra 300¥, you can add a drink.

My experience

Soupless noodles
This is my favourite dish so far! Yummy fried noodles with aromatic spring onion, crispy fried onion and tender soy chicken. It came with a rich broth with a strong ginger note. Perfect!

Vegan chopped chicken rice
This bowl was really yummy and filling. The "chicken" was soft and flavourful and went perfectly with the rice.

Gyoza
The gyoza pieces were relatively big and flavourful!

Sweet azuki bean soy pudding
I love Ming-Teng Hao Hao's soy pudding for a light dessert or snack. There are six different ones and all come with soft tofu, various toppings and syrup. The sweet azuki bean one came with zenzai sirup, rolled oats, shiratama (small mochi balls), tapioka, peanuts and kinako (roasted soy bean powder). I personally loved the combination of different textures and it had a light sweetness which made it perfect for a healthy dessert. Thanks to the tofu and nuts it was also quite filling. I recommend it as a afternoon snack or maybe even breakfast.

Iced soy milk with azuki beans
This drink is a must-try! Rich, super fluffy soy milk paried with sweet azuki beans makes a perfect light dessert.

What is Veganism?
"Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.“
- The Vegan Society
Reasons to choose vegan alternatives:
Protect animals from suffering horrendously and getting killed
A whole-food plant-based vegan diet has the least environmental impact
A whole-food plant-based vegan diet is extremely healthy and can help reversing various diseases like type 2 diabetes or heart diseases.
For people, as a vegan diet requires only one third of the land needed to support a meat and dairy diet.
